Waterfall : Between Potential and Challenges, the City of Happiness
The charming town of Waterfall located in the Plateau Central department in the east of Haiti, is commonly referred to as the “City of Happiness.” Endowed with significant agricultural and touristic potential, Waterfall faces substantial challenges.
Diverse Agricultural Potential
With a population of 50,000 inhabitants spread across 4 communal sections, Waterfall benefits from a diverse agricultural production. However, the cultivation of maize, millet, and sugarcane dominates, accompanied by livestock farming.
A Major Challenge: Sugarcane Disease
Unfortunately, sugarcane cultivation is currently facing numerous damages due to an unidentified disease. Furthermore, the absence of agronomists to assist the farmers in this complex situation exacerbates the issue.
A Precious Natural Environment Under Threat
The municipality of Waterfall is rich in water and vegetation, providing a naturally preserved environment. Nonetheless, it’s important to note that instances of rampant deforestation are beginning to be noticed, jeopardizing this ecological balance.
Deficit in Social Services
Despite its potential, social services in Waterfall are nearly nonexistent. The population enjoys a maximum of 4 hours of electricity per day, and for many months, landline phones have been inaccessible.
An Infrastructure Challenge: Lack of Communication Routes
According to the residents, a significant handicap is the absence of proper road communication. The roads are in very poor condition, especially during the rainy season, making travel difficult. Some believe that the municipality is neglected by the authorities.
Limited Health and Education Services
Health and education services are also precarious, mostly dependent on interventions from Non-Governmental Organizations in the region.
A Touristic Gem
Despite these challenges, life in Waterfall is usually peaceful, according to members of the population. However, July brings a notable change as thousands of pilgrims flock to the region to celebrate the patronal feast of the Miracle Virgin. They take the opportunity to discover the famous waterfall, which enjoys an international reputation for its breathtaking beauty.
A Magnificent View
From the mountaintops that surround the town, the view is simply magnificent, providing visitors and residents with a stunning spectacle.
Waterfall, despite its difficulties, is a destination full of potential and charm, where authenticity and the beauty of nature harmoniously coexist. This “City of Happiness” deserves attention and support to preserve its natural heritage and improve the quality of life for its residents.
