      Discovering Habitation Leclerc in Carrefour

Nestled in the popular neighborhood of Carrefour, Habitation Leclerc, located in Martissant 23, is a historical gem that deserves a visit. To get there from Port-au-Prince, head towards Carrefour and turn left at the Celeste lottery booth.

During your visit, you can explore the main entrance of Habitation Leclerc. However, what was once one of the most beautiful hotels in the world 20 years ago, now only the garden remains. On the right side of the entrance, there is a monument erected in honor of the British Empire. Unfortunately, the site has been invaded by illegal constructions over the years.

Originally, this lush 16-hectare park was chosen as a residence in Port-au-Prince by Pauline Leclerc, the sister of Bonaparte. In 1974, Olivier Coquelin managed a hotel there, consisting of 24 villas designed by the architect Albert Mangonès, grouped in 4 or 5 and sharing 11 private pools of various shapes. The very location of Pauline Leclerc’s residence once housed the dining room, whose remnants indicate its location at the entrance of the park.

Despite the challenges and changes it has experienced over the years, Habitation Leclerc remains a precious testimony to Haiti’s history and heritage. Despite the alterations suffered by the site, the beauty of this park, with its historical remains and Vodou temple, continues to fascinate visitors in search of history and culture. Come explore this place steeped in memory and immerse yourself in the rich stories hidden behind the walls of this exceptional former residence.
