Biography
Wyclef Jean (born Nel Ust Wyclef Jean on October 17, 1969, in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti) is a Haitian rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer. A founding member of the Fugees, he helped shape the group’s landmark album “The Score” (1996) before launching a solo career with “Wyclef Jean Presents The Carnival” (1997). His solo catalog spans hip-hop, reggae fusion, kompa, R&B and pop-rap. As a writer/producer and featured artist he contributed to global hits such as Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie,” Santana’s “Maria Maria,” Destiny’s Child’s “No, No, No (Part 2),” and Mary J. Blige’s duet “911.” Beyond music, he has been active in Haitian civic life and humanitarian work; in 2010 he announced a presidential bid in Haiti (ultimately ruled ineligible due to residency). His honors include three Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe nomination for “Million Voices” (Hotel Rwanda), the BET Humanitarian Award, the NAACP Vanguard Award, and Haiti’s National Order of Honour and Merit.
