Biography

Emeline Michel is a Haitian singer, songwriter, producer and bandleader, widely hailed as the "Queen of Haitian song." Born in Gonaïves, she grew up singing gospel before formal training at the Detroit Jazz Center. She founded the production company/label Cheval de Feu and has released ten studio albums, including "Cordes & Âme" (2000), "Rasin Kreyòl" (2004) and her 10th studio album "Quintessence" (2013). Her repertoire fuses Haitian compas and rara with jazz, pop and folk influences, carried by poetic Creole/French lyrics. She has headlined major stages such as Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the Montréal International Jazz Festival, and appeared on the 2010 "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon. Beyond music, she has served as an ambassador for the Red Cross and supported UN campaigns to end violence against women.
