Mastering the Stage (and the Room) 🎤
Did you know that most people fear public speaking more than death? The good news is that confidence is a skill, not a personality trait. You can learn to be a powerful speaker.
1. Preparation is the Enemy of Anxiety
The more you know your material, the less nervous you will feel.
- Do not memorize your speech word-for-word.
- Do memorize your “Opening” and “Closing” so you start and end strong.
- Use bullet points to guide your thoughts.
2. The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique 🌬️
Before you walk on stage or enter a meeting, calm your nervous system. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale slowly for 8. This physically stops the “fight or flight” response in your body.
3. Body Language and Eye Contact
Your body speaks before you do.
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Keep your hands visible (never in your pockets!).
- Make eye contact with one person at a time for 3-5 seconds.
4. Practice in Front of a Mirror
Watch your facial expressions. Are you smiling? Do you look approachable?
Final Thought
Even the best speakers get nervous. The goal is to make your “butterflies” fly in formation! 🌟
